Acknowledgements are due to the following participants on the Darwin-L mailing list where common descent was discussed and who I am paraphrasing: Paul Nelson, Sander J Gliboff, Professor Jean J Menier, Ellery Lanier; and Paul Gallagher, who provided details of Erasmus Darwin's views. Elmer Bataitis sent me excerpts from his notes from Zoonomia. William Brindley started this off by discussing Patrick Matthew's views with me. Helpful comments were also made by Ron Amundson, who noted some potentially misleading statements regarding Mendel, Owen and Chambers. Mike Dunford has corrected many errors and provided much information on sources, particularly on Louis Agassiz and on geological matters. All remaining mistakes and omissions are therefore mine.
Further comment and advice was received from Peter Lamb, Jim Foley and Cosma Shalizi, who provided the information regarding Aristotle and Empedocles on 'natural selection'.
Seth Jackson provided the quotation from Gould on Natural Selection precursors. A correspondent provided me information about Pallas being German, not French; I am sorry to have lost your name - please email me to let me know again. Images have been scanned from several sources, including Nördenskiold's 1929 and Singer's 1931 histories of biology, and a delightful tome entitled The Picture Book of Evolution published in 1925. I therefore have reason to think they are not subject to copyright. The figure showing Barry's diagram of von Baer's developmental tree is redrawn from Richards 1992.
As always I owe more than I can tell to the late Dave Rindos, David Hull, and my supervisors, Gareth Nelson and Neil Thomason.
