The TalkOrigins Archive is a collection of articles and essays that explore the creation/evolution controversy from a mainstream scientific perspective. Most of its material proceeds from the scientific view that the earth is ancient, that there was no global flood, and that evolution is responsible for the earth's present biodiversity.
The Archive was established in 1994 to provide easier access to the frequently asked questions, essays, and recurring responses that were being posted to the talk.origins Usenet newsgroup. Over time it grew into a broader public resource that preserves explanatory articles, claim responses, historical material, feedback, search, and links to related resources.
The Archive does not try to present every position as if all views stand on equal scientific footing. Its role is to provide mainstream scientific responses to recurring creationist and intelligent-design claims, while also making it easier for readers to find alternative views through linked external material and the wider history of the controversy.
Readers should also understand the Archive's reliability model. Much of its material was sharpened through extended public criticism and debate rather than formal journal peer review. That makes it valuable as explanatory and evidentiary material, but it does not remove the need to consult primary literature, cited sources, and current scientific work when evaluating a question in depth.
